Off Road Cave Safari is Fiji’s first and original off road tour. From the Coral Coast town of Sigatoka, climb onboard Off Road Cave Safari’s mini coaches to visit Fiji’s largest cave system, the Naihehe Cave. Naihehe means ‘lost’. It’s believed that one will get lost inside the cave if they don’t seek blessings from the local priest and his family who guard it before entering. Discover the beauty of Fiji and learn about its cannibalism history with experienced guides. Enjoy the journey to the caves with drivers who are trained to the highest standard to manoeuvre powerful vehicles to transport you safely and comfortably to the largest cave in Fiji.
This adventure is ideal for those who love a bit of history and cultural knowledge packed with a few kicks of physical exertion. Don’t forget your camera to capture photos of the villagers and village life as well as the unforgettable scenery on your way to the caves.
After half an hour, you will arrive at the high priest’s house whose family is made up of four brothers from Sautabu village and are the traditional keeprs of Naihehe Cave for centuries. Female guests will be asked to wear complimentary safari sulus. After seeking the priest’s blessings by presenting the traditional offering of kava, your Off Road Cave Safari guide will lead you to the entrance of the Naihehe Cave, a mere 5 minute stroll away, once the kava ceremony is complete.
Flashlights and lanterns light up the 170-meter cave. Make your way past small caverns and low passages before squeezing through the main cave chamber which was once a fortress for a cannibal tribe and still contains a cannibal oven, a ritual platform, the sacred priest chamber and other reminders of its cannibal history.
The rich history is all in the details – escape routes that are now naturally sealed tell of a time when warriors hid from enemies at the cave entrance. They would climb up the routes to gather food. Allow the guides to tell you stories about the cannibal caves that hopefully won’t leave your stomach churning because a yummy BBQ lunch with fresh fruit and juice awaits you.
