Located on the second lagoon, Poppy’s On The Lagoon Resort is the perfect choice for those wanting to stay within Port Vila town and close to all the buzz, yet feel so far away. Enclosed in lovely gardens with the lagoon at its front, Poppy’s feels like a secluded and quiet oasis. It is owned and operated by Joanne Wade and Peter Rotteveel, who first came across Poppy’s and Vanuatu back in 2003, when they were offered the opportunity to go into partnership with a friend. At the time, they knew very little about Vanuatu, but, having owned successful award winning restaurants and guest houses in Australia, they decided to book a ‘reconnaissance’ trip and see if it really was as good as it sounded. They landed in Vanuatu and it was love at first sight. “We came for a week, saw it and immediately said yes,” tells Joanne.
One year later, they decided to buy the full shares of the resort and for the past eleven years they have taken what was a small fourteen-bungalow affair to the lovely secluded spot that it is today. With three pools, a café, restaurant, spa and 31 self-contained apartments, villas and bungalows, Poppy’s is a great work of love, good taste and good judgment.
The attention to detail that Joanne and Peter are so fond of is Poppy’s trademark and you can immediately see it in everything. From the gardens, to the pool area and beach, the restaurant and the accommodation, good taste and elegance prevails, creating a serene, elegant and beautiful atmosphere.
The resort has a wide range of accommodation options that cater for all needs and tastes. Families are well provided for, with the huge three-bedroom lagoon view apartments accommodating up to eight people, with two bathrooms, full kitchen, dining and living areas. If you would like to step right onto the beach from your front door, the three-bedroom beachfront villas give you all the space plus the ultimate luxury of a beach on your door step.
Offering spacious apartment-style accommodation with beautiful views over the pool and Erakor Lagoon, the two-bedroom lagoon suites have a large bathroom and open plan living/kitchen area. Those on a budget will love the Garden View Bungalows. Nestled amongst the lush, award-winning tropical garden, the stand-alone bungalows are fully self-contained and situated just steps from the adult pool. Luxuriously furnished with island décor, everything you could possible need is there.
Luxury-seekers will enjoy the beachfront spa luxury bungalows. Free-standing and fully self-contained, they feature air conditioning, private indoor spa and balcony with spectacular views, only five metres from the water’s edge.
Perfect for honeymooners, couples wanting a little more privacy or those who like to have the best. Last but not least, the Lagoon View Studios, located high up on the hill that flanks the resort, enjoy spectacular views of Erakor Lagoon and magnificent cooling breezes.
The resort offers all the mod cons: internet, satellite TV, BBQ and leisure areas, Day Spa, room service, nanny and baby sitting services amongst others. With three swimming pools, one of them an adults-only pool, you will find that whether pikininis are part of your travelling party or not, you can find your very own spot to enjoy undisturbed.
Poppy’s offer a variety of activities, from snorkeling, kayaking or swimming to some lovely relaxing time enjoying one of the great and affordable treatments from their spa.
Catering for weddings and events, Poppy’s wedding packages take stress and work out of your wedding with your own wedding coordinator. The resort also offers packages for families/groups, and business/corporate with a purpose built conference room seating up to 20 guests.
Their new restaurant ‘Leaf’, with two open-air fares right on the water edge, has recently opened, adding another dining experience to the resort and Port Vila town. Featuring a fresh menu using seasonal ingredients showcasing the finest local produce, food is served simply and with Pacific hospitality. Although Poppy’s accommodation is self-contained, ‘Leaf’ was developed in response to guests’ desire to easily enjoy a good meal out; after all, a holiday is a holiday! Following cyclone Pam last year, Poppy’s started to grow a lot of their own produce. “The cyclone changed our motivation to use the gardens for food as well as pleasure”. Now amongst the flowers, you can spot coriander and other fruit and vegetables.
The cyclone also completely destroyed their second property in Tanna, Friendly Bungalows. With the aid of their son, landscape architect, Lucas Rotteveel, the family rebuilt the Tanna property which now enjoys a more upmarket building and design. “After the cyclone, it was heartbreaking to see the devastation, in Tanna and elsewhere,” explains Joanne. “Without Lucas, I don’t think we could have mustered the energy to rebuild again.” Friendly has now been renamed ‘Friendly Beach’ and consists of four upmarket villas and a restaurant, right on the beach, in a very remote location next to the startling Mount Yasur volcano.
Another amazing place to enjoy in Vanuatu!
